BLOG ENTRY January 19. 2015
From start to finish this was fun, beginning with palette knife, then brushwork and then some spray paint back to palette knife… Mixed media on Masonite. There’s some video on my Instagram, go check it @mrewokone
this painting has been through a lot of phases…. and has overseen a good amount of hardship in my personal life, so I feel that the ingredients for this piece are very unique. From it’s inception, it was originally planned to be painted on a wall in Miami’s Art District, but after dealing with the politics and bureaucracy, the wall was literally given to an amateur and didn’t last more than 3 months before it was destroyed by locals, a few yrs later the wall looks like trash. So after returning to NY that December I came home with the original sketch. I decided to put the energy of it onto a canvas 5 ft tall x 4 ft wide. Along the way I made some changes to it’s content, at first my plan was to put a mermaid on a wrecked pirate ship on the top. Then there was a period where I painted a very surreal portrait of someone specific representing the mermaid, but after weeks of seeing it, it became more of a painful reminder instead of a homage or a promise… I walked away from the painting again for a few months unsure what to do… eventually I made the decision to cover it completely with something else, as well as removing one of the birds that turned into another subject completely, and again the Baboon’s face in the shadow changed from it’s original version seen in the original sketch above….
All in all, I’m very happy to have this completed, it started to become a thing where I could just sit for whole nights just doing detail… It needed to be finished and I think my plan mentally was to “wrap it up by the end of the year” and have a kind of closure mentally for everything that this painting has been through for me. A lot of pain…. I am however very happy to be able to share it finally in it’s completion.
blood, sweat, stress, and even tears are ingredients in this mixed media final result… I don’t actually have a name for it yet, maybe one of you can help….
This is a #TBT pic I found somewhere on a hard drive. Figured I’d share it. Also below is the video from the project.
So daily this shit has unfolded in the “media” ( if that’s what were calling it these days) and I’ve had fun with it. recently N. Korea’s internet apparently got fried clyde, which is actually pretty hilarious, they said there’s only about a 1000 IP addresses in the whole country. LOLLLLL that alone cracks me up, anyway I guess it went “off” over there, and unfortunately none of them can see my jokes, but maybe one day when they get back on line…. newest first, and older goes back in time….
UPDATE! Literally had to add this while I was posting this entry….
“yaaaaay, I bet it’s Denis”
“That’s it Amewwicca, no mah games! “
From when he said, somethin’ on the lines of “We didn’t threaten SONY, and if you don;t believe us, we’ll threaten you” #logic #mensa
So I wrapped this up this morning… Seems fitting to finish it right before Xmas, since the imagery of Santa is believed to have come from the Amanita Muscaria Mushroom. But I think I’m g’nna sit on it a bit and see if it needs any more additions. I do enjoy it’s simplicity, but I wanna see how it feels in a week or so…..
I decided to wrap 3 vid blogs from my Miami adventures last week, still more to come but I wanted to get these knocked out and up for everyone waiting… Here we go, they’re loosely done and fun…. enjoy.
Still to come will be #96 of the main wall with SP.one and Totem2.
This is just crazy, I was in town painting literally 1/2 a block away from where this went down, and a friend was there and took the pictures you see of the kid under the car being used without permission in all these articles, he also has video of the aftermath from across the street. Within 24 hours of him posting the picture on his Instagram his account was deleted by because the Police pressed them to delete the “evidence of an ongoing Police Investigation”. Where I come from that’s called a cover up… If you know anything about Instagram, a picture that violates its rules ( that will get pulled by IG) can sit up on your feed for weeks before its finally yanked and all you get is a silly warning. The fact that my friends whole account was deleted within 24 hrs. is proof enough for me that the Miami PD was trying to manipulate the story that would unfold as the sun came up the following day. Now seeing as how they keep trying to cover their asses with confiscating nearby surveillance footage and saying he was wearing all black and he was behind parked cars etc etc is all fabricated noise that cops know how to do to put things into their favor. They went out of their way on a damage control campaign attempting to keep things together b4 it got out of hand. This might have worked in the 80s or 90s but today there’s too much free distribution of information. This is why all of these accounts of bad cops are surfacing now, because the ability to lie and present false stories is being taken away from the PD.
And before any of my readers on here say some dumb shit about “if he wasn’t committing a crime….blah blah” let me explain something here, this is the LARGEST street art festival in the WORLD currently, where artists from everywhere, amateurs up to professionals come and paint walls for free throughout the year, this poor 21 yr old kid, was doing what any kid on the come up would do to try to channel his creativity into becoming someone he might admire one day. He was basically trying to use a language that he admired but didn’t yet fully know how to express himself with, but was going thru the motions that many many many success stories before him followed… This could have easily been me at 21. So before anyone says shit about graffiti being a crime, think about how cool you all think I am today, my “amazing art and funny drawings and crazy characters” and how cool everyone wants to be talking to me in person and asking me about what I do, and how did I get to where I am today. I get this from “adults” every single day of my life, but we all conveniently put aside that in the eyes of the law and the Gov. I was a criminal like this for easily OVER 20 yrs. while everyone else I grew up with went out and did the “normal” routine to, I went a different direction to finally be able to be in a position where companies, musicians, artists and celebrities now support me. People envy the end result, but don’t want to admit it’s trials and tribulations on the path to success… Everyone wants to kiss Banky’s ass today, but no one wants to talk about the years when that guy was a Graffiti vandal writing his name with spray paint on people’s property. Graffiti is art, and the truth is nothing is ever “damaged” that can’t be covered with 2 strokes of paint. Paint goes over paint always, Period. If a wall is white, and it’s going to be painted white again next week, my name on it isn’t “destroying” shit.
There’s so much to be said about this, I could go on and on….
but mainly Im disgusted this shit keeps happening… I’ll leave off with this-
LOCAL NEWS LINKS
and another about the Officer’s prior complaint record
Scribbling, and figuring out the mechanics and weight distribution, color etc…..
From sketch, to completion, this piece goes to a collector on Staten Island. Not sure if I’ll add more to it, so I’m going to sit on it a few days and analyze…
Inspired all week….. Stay tuned, big news to drop hopefully by this time next week. Some of you can tell what I got up my sleeve….. I am currently accepting all potential proposals from publishing companies for a VERY LARGE forthcoming kid’s book project. contact STAFF@MR-EWOKONE.COM to negotiate terms and conditions if you are interested in becoming a partner in this venture.
-Some weeks I wont draw at all, which when I think about it seems odd, Im clearly the kind of person who can see things and in a second can jot it down or get an idea on paper. A lot of times when the TV is off, or its late night and Im thinking, my brain races and I’ll get ideas, and this can kick start a creative process in the lab…. but some weeks can go by where I wont draw anything at all, it’s weird and I can’t explain it at all, I dont force it i just let it be… In any event this week in NYC its getting to be colder out and darker earlier, this is the time of year where I always switch gears and start to get settled into my studio time… This goes thru the winter till I get a break in the middle to go to Miami around Dec. or maybe Puerto Rico around the 1st or 2nd month of the new year… but for the most part I generally become the all nighter kind of studio painter where I stay up for days and days drink wine by the bottle, order tons of take out, listen to tons of music, and catching short naps here and there where I can… Weeks become a fuzzy blur at times and in some cases just not seeing sunlight for days in a row… I think Ive become used to this kind of lifestyle over the years and still find it hard to explain to normal people who would look at me like somethin’s gotta be wrong. In all honesty, it’s something I love and look forward to, straight zoning out for days and days feeling delirious sometimes even haha//, ill set up a new painting across the room and knock out, so when I wake up its the first thing I look at and try to view it fresh for the first time… It’s an amazing experience for me I hope some of you might experience one day for yourselves…
The point Im getting at is I can feel this energy building up inside me this week that I think will launch me into this indoor season over here very soon. Ive been drawing and painting a lot lately, much more than I regularly do, my brain just wont shut off and I have this urge to get it on paper or lose it forever….. I think Im making up for some lost time, this time last year my head wasn;t int he right place and I couldn’t focus on things.
I love scribbling, so here’s some sketches and some things Ive been messing with this week. Again, some other conceptual stuff I wont share but some fun stuff below….
The last couple pics I threw in are just some randoms to share. This isn’t your regular entry I guess. More things coming next week, hang tight and my next post will have some big updates I hope I can finally share…
The show is called Part of the Toy Tokyo: From the Archives Auction and it’s a display of items from Lev’s ( Toy Tokyo) private collection. I’ve known Lev for a long time, and he has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to investing in the right things/people, he just sees around the corner I like to say. This auction is all his creation and I’m happy to be able to say there’s a few of my pieces in there that have a chance to find a new collection. There is a lot of other incredible pieces in this auction as well. Have a look, and register is you see something you like, PADDLE8 is a very reputable Auction House that has been doing a lot of great things, show them your support.
Above is the master copy Bronze staue created from my Horselington Figure by Jeff Decker of Hippodrome Studios. We initially had plans to do about 5 of these but I changed gears and moved away from The Horselington character so this remains the single and only Bronze ever made. If you know anything about Bronze work, you know the history and legacy of Jeff Decker, if not use your Google skills. I was honored when he was so excited to do this. It’s unfortunate we never made more.
Some recap images, too much to type, try to get an idea from some images. Thank you ALL who came out to the Con, patiently hung out on the line and supported by scooping up the PURPLE Grand Finally ( #GRANDFINALINGTON ) version of the Brainlington Saga. This year has been amazing and a great introduction getting back into the Vinyl scene again.
It was a great last 3 days.
So I hung this piece up for a while and something was missing, I decided to go back in and ad a pop color outline on the White spiral and to change the nails to an Electric blue, as it also seemed fitting to put Weed plants and Penises painted on her nails, for obvious reasons….
The Wreeking Balls Tour… Miley Serious… 2014….. TWERKLINGTON…. as seen on TV……… Only in ‘Merica…… Corrupting your youth since 2013.
BLOG POST Sunday Aug. 24th. IRONMAN MARK 42 Shoulder Upgrade.
I haven’t been painting ( graffiti) much lately so I decided to share something else, a personal hobby I got into a few years ago, that sorta turned into a little obsession of perfection for me… Last year I dived into creating my 2nd Ironman suit ( the mark 42 ), it basically took an entire year to build, and paint, with the help of a lot of friends from around the world, my helmet was made by a guy in Canada “Biggeek1972″. My electronics/ audio in the hands and Chest reactor came from “Darkside501″. The actual hands/gloves where 3d printed by “MrTrouble”. The forearms where sized and 3d printed by a friend named “Abb eliten” and the suit itself was sized and created by a good friend “quovadis0920” from the Phillipines…. When I actually think about it now, it is pretty extreme, but I think my goal was to slowly do it right with the right people no matter how long it took, if I was going to invest all this time and effort and $$$ I might as well make it worth it in the end…
Anyway, right around October of last year I had to hustle to get it finished and I actually did have to cut a few corners, so here we are in summer of 2014 and Im replacing the shoulder bells with exact movie replica shoulders 3d printed and and recasted in a cold steal black fiberglass (very strong). I have always been a better painter than builder ( You should see the terrible Mark 5 I made before this suit ) so I decided to show my process to finalizing these to look real and match up to my suit’s paint job from Oct.
So above you can see the process in which I go thru painting this to look the way I like it…. My suit is “battle damaged” because when I finished painting it last Oct. it was too pristine and looked too clean IMO. So after about a week of contemplation, I decided to go in on a real damaged look… After a bit of hunting for special effects/ movie tricks in the industry I found out how to give the edges a scratched metal look without ruining all my paint job ( making it look like there’s actual metal under the paint) hard work and basically making it look like it skidded across the pavement or whatever during alil’ battle….
Below are a few reference pics you can see of what the shoulders look like clean, as well as battle damaged…
And the battle damaged look… Below is my suit from last Oct. with the OLD Shoulders….
So if you’ve been half paying attention, now you might understand where all these Ironman jokes come from around my media and promo outlets… More updates when I attach the new shoulders and do a test drive fully suited….
